MARTA HURTADO PHOTOGRAPHY | How to prepare for your first photo session

More than anything else people ask me how to prepare for their photo session, concerned and slightly worried. Which is natural, for most of my first time clients it’s their first experience of planing a professional photo session. They don’t know what to expect, or how to prepare, and why should they?! It’s my job to make sure to share with them all they need to know, reassure them, and inform them. I’m here for them! I want to make sure that my clients know how to prepare, and that they see our work together for what it should be, a dream come true photo session experience. Where they get to have the best portraits taken of themselves, that they have ever seen .

When I hear this question of how to prepare, it brings a smile into my face. As I know, that it’s the one of the first steps of an incredible soulful photographic journey.

I always try to anticipate my clients needs, I know this question is coming. I’m ready to answer it, and make sure that they will feel as excited as I’m about starting planing!

I make sure from the first moment till the last, that the whole photo session experience is as easy, well planed and as enchanting as possible for everyone involved. Photo session with a professional photographer should be a pampering, uplifting experience from the 1st Consultation till the Reveal Day, and delivery of the Luxury Portfolio Box full of incredible printed portraits.

Here are the steps I take to make sure that that happens. And that as a client you know how to prepare!

1. During the 1st Consultation I share a Welcoming Package with all my clients. I address in it all the questions regarding knowing how to prepare and what they need to think of. I address and share style advice, beauty tips and planing tools. I remind my clients to pamper themselves. To drink plenty of water and start stretching every day.

2. While keeping in mind to take care of the body, I also make sure that I address all aspects of your being; body, mind and soul. I’m specializing in women portrait photography, and I invite all women that come to my studio to reconnect with not only who they were, but also who they are in this moment. I also invite them to connect to that woman they need and want to see in their portraits. I ask them how do they dream to be photographed? And why do they choose to be photographer in this moment, why now? Out of experience I know that there is often a deeper reason hidden behind it.

3. A photo session experience is their chance to be a model for a day. To celebrate who they are, and feel incredible in their own skin. It’s their chance to wake up, and to be the Goddesses that truly they are.

To achieve that goal I invite them to start writing in a journal. I invite them to start writing about who they are in this moment, how they want to see themselves. To write about which part of themselves they love, or to address the part of themselves that they might have lost and maybe want to reconnect with.

This part is crucial. It’s soulful, healing… and allowing, inviting change and shift into their lives. This step also creates an important connection between me, as a photographer, and my client. This step helps me understand my client’s needs and hopes. It helps me capture their soulful beauty in portraits.

4. The 1st Consultation is also the best moment to get familiar with my session policies; rescheduling policy, contract and copyright information. I explain the whole process, of what my client can expect and when. My Welcoming Packages have it all. Just in case they would need to check any of the shared information, they have it and know where to find it. I want my clients to feel confident, informed, excited about their incredible photo session experience, and make sure that they make the most of their time with me.

As a photographer I can only do so much. At the end of the day, my clients are in control of their photos, their final portraits, and the experience they have with me. I always show up 150% ready. I’m there for them and a photo session experience in my photography studio is all about them.

I know that if they apply my helpful, thoughtful Tips, they will have an incredible photo session experience.I’ve seen it countless times with my clients. On many occasions, I experienced the magic and power of a well prepared photo session. But to achieve that goal, it’s crucial that my clients also do their part.

As long as they follow my guidelines, while preparing for their photo session, they will allow and invite incredible magic. A life changing transformation will take place, that is carried well beyond the photo session experience. Together we will be able to create fabulous, amazing photos that they have always dreamed of! And a life changing luxury photography experience that will become one of their cherished memories.

We will celebrate them… as they will know now, how to accept and truly apreciate their own soulful beauty!
